Five Days of Action: Keeping Kids Safe in the Digital Space
The Oshkosh YMCA is joining the Five Days of Action®—a national campaign focused on preventing child abuse and keeping kids safe. From April 13-17, we’re shining a light on the digital world, and how adults can help kids build healthy, safe habits online.
About The Five Days of Action
Led by YMCA of the USA, The Five Days of Action® is a national initiative held every year in April as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Ys across the country come together to raise awareness about child sexual abuse and share ways adults can help prevent it. Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing resources for parents and caregivers, starting important conversations, and inviting our community to take the pledge to protect kids.
“At the Y, we believe that keeping kids safe is not something you can simply check off a list…it has to live in the culture of everything we do,”
says Angie Flanigan, Branch Executive at the 20th Ave Y—capturing the heart of the Y’s approach to youth safety.
“Child safety is not just a policy — it is a deeply personal commitment that I carry with me every single day. Every child who walks through our doors deserves a place where they feel safe, loved, and truly well cared for, and I am passionate about making sure that is exactly what they find here at the Oshkosh YMCA.”
Informed Adults = Safer Kids
Kids are growing up in a digital world, and while technology may feel second nature, understanding safety risks doesn’t always come as easily. Whether its online gaming, social media, or group chats with friends, these spaces change fast— even parents who feel confident online can find themselves unsure of what to watch for.
It’s important for adults to learn how to recognize red flags and share that knowledge with your children. Having open, frequent conversations about online safety is key for making safe practices a habit.
What You Can Do
YMCA of the USA has partnered with abuse prevention experts, such as Praesidium, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), Lauren’s Kids, and the National Children’s Alliance to create an online hub of digital safety resources.
Head over to fivedaysofaction.org for videos, fact sheets, and tips & tricks. Find resources to help you:
- Teach good cyber habits by age group
- Learn how to spot potential grooming behaviors
- Understand the risk of AI & sextortion
The digital world isn’t going anywhere—but with the right tools and awareness, it can be a safer place for kids to learn and connect.
Join the Conversation
Keeping kids safe is something we all play a role in. By staying informed, learning the signs, and starting conversations, we can help create safer spaces for every child—online and beyond. From April 13-17, take time to talk to your kids. Explore resources, share what you learn, and join us in taking the pledge to protect kids.
