On July 31, the Oshkosh Y proudly celebrates International Lifeguard Appreciation Day, recognizing the trained professionals who work tirelessly to ensure safety in and around the water every single day. From pools, to lakes, to swim lessons, lifeguards are frontline protectors who make recreation possible—and safe—for thousands of local residents each year.
At the Oshkosh YMCA, lifeguards support vital aquatics programs, including:

- Swim lessons for all ages, with a focus on water safety and drowning prevention;
- Open swim and aquatic fitness classes that promote healthy lifestyles;
- Adapted Aquatics, where swimmers of all ability levels can enjoy the water.
And their presence gives parents peace of mind and allows children to build confidence, independence, and joy around water—critical life skills that last a lifetime.
Everyday Heroes Who Keep Our Waters Safe
Lifeguards embody the core values of the Y: caring, honestly, respect, and responsibility. Their skills & dedication make it possible for the Y to serve our community through our pools.
“The guards and staff are caring, kind, and knowledgeable. The friendly vibe makes it fun to exercise.”

Today, we say ‘thank you’ to the everyday heroes who keep our community safe and foster a sense of trust, security, and encouragement in our facilities.
