If it feels like everyone is suddenly talking about pickleball… you’re not imagining it.

Pickleball has quickly become one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, showing up everywhere from neighborhood courts to dedicated facilities. And once you try it, it’s easy to see why.

It’s Easy to Learn (Seriously)

One of the biggest reasons pickleball has taken off is how approachable it is.

You don’t need to be super athletic or have years of experience to get started. The rules are simple, the court is smaller than tennis, and rallies are easier to keep going—even if it’s your very first time playing.

It’s the kind of game where you can walk in as a beginner and still have fun right away.

It’s a Great Workout That Doesn’t Feel Overwhelming

Pickleball keeps you moving: quick steps, light cardio, hand-eye coordination. But unlike other sports, it doesn’t feel intense or intimidating.

You can play at your own pace, whether you’re looking for a casual game or something a little more competitive. It’s active, energizing, and just challenging enough to keep you coming back.

It’s Incredibly Social

This might be the real reason people stick with it.

Pickleball is naturally social. Games are quick, players rotate in and out, and it’s easy to strike up a conversation between points. Before long, familiar faces become regular playing partners.

At the Y, that sense of connection is a big part of what makes pickleball special. It’s not just about the game, it’s also about finding your people. If you’re looking for community, you can find it on the court.

There’s a Place for Every Skill Level

Whether you’re a total newbie or a seasoned player, there’s a place for you.

At the Oshkosh Y Tennis & Pickleball Center, open play is designed with players in mind—offering opportunities for different skill levels, from beginners to more experienced players. Friday night open pickleball is a popular option, with courts organized by level so everyone can jump in and play.

You’ll also find open play opportunities at the Downtown and 20th Avenue Ys, where games take place right in the gym, no sign-up required. Just show up and get in the game.

You Don’t Need Much to Get Started

Another reason pickleball is so accessible? The barrier to entry is low.

You can bring your own paddle, or use equipment available at the Tennis & Pickleball Center. If you’re ready to get your own gear, the pro shop and knowledgeable staff can help you find the right fit.

And if you’ve never played before, beginner lessons and intro sessions are offered throughout the year for all ages—so you can learn the basics and build confidence before jumping into a game.

It’s Growing for a Reason

At the Oshkosh Y, pickleball continues to bring people together in a big way. In 2025 alone, 900 people participated in open play, leagues, lessons, and clinics over 3,000 times. That’s a lot of growth!

Plus, pickleball is uniquely suited for all stages of life, so it’s popular with all age groups. The easy learning curve makes it accessible for kids, the quick games are great for adults looking to squeeze activity into a busy week, and its very low impact on the joints, making it a great choice for older folks trying to stay active.

Come Try It Out

If you’ve been curious about pickleball, this is your sign to give it a shot.

You don’t need experience or special equipment, just show up and get into the fun.

And who knows, before long you might find yourself saying “just one more game!”
