When most people think about healthy aging, they think about exercise. Staying physically active helps maintain strength, balance, mobility, and independence—and that's a big reason so many adults over 55 make the YMCA part of their routine. But there's another piece of healthy aging that's just as important: staying socially connected.

How Retirement Changes Your Social Habits

Retirement is one of life's biggest transitions. After years of seeing coworkers every day, chatting in the hallway, sharing lunch breaks, and solving problems together, those daily connections can disappear almost overnight.

Adults near retirement age are usually looking forward to enjoying more free time, but that free time can also be accompanied by unexpected loneliness. While seeking out new friendships after a certain age may feel daunting to some, being intentional about building new relationships can have a significant impact on your overall health.

Why Your Social Health is so Important

Over the past several years, experts have increasingly recognized loneliness as a serious health concern, even classifying it as a public health epidemic. In a recent landmark study, researchers found that “social isolation and loneliness are most strongly linked to heart disease and stroke, with a 29% increased risk for heart attack and/or death from heart disease and a 32% increased risk for stroke.”

Meaningful social connections can improve mental well-being, reduce stress, encourage healthy habits, and simply make life more enjoyable. Social health is easily neglected, which can lead to a decline in overall health.

But the good news is that it's never too late to start building your community.

Staying Socially Connected at the Y

At the Oshkosh YMCA, our FOREVERWELL 55+ program is about much more than fitness. While you'll find group exercise classes designed specifically for older adults, you'll also discover opportunities to explore new interests like book clubs or walking groups, and spend time with people who are in a similar stage of life.

Join us for a fitness class, attend a lifelong learning presentation, go on a day trip, or simply chat with friends over coffee after class. Whatever your interest, every visit is an opportunity to strengthen not only your body, but your sense of belonging.

One of the best parts about FOREVERWELL at the Y is that friendships form naturally. Take YMCA member Deb for example, who found social connection through YMCA programs:

“What began as a simple exercise class turned into a life-changing journey for me— boosting my confidence, building friendships and empowering me to spread positivity in the community. The exercise is the reason I come, but the effect is connection.”

Seeing familiar faces each week, encouraging one another, and celebrating milestones together makes the Y more than a place to work out—it becomes part of your community.

If you're looking for a place to stay active, meet new people, and be part of a welcoming community, we'd love to help you get started. Explore our FOREVERWELL 55+ programs and discover how the YMCA supports body, mind, and spirit at every age.
